january 2008 movie review

well it is that time again. movie review! i haven’t done one of these for a while. i do watch a fair share of films but i like to only comment on those i really like or really hate. today i present a mixed bag of nutty nuts.

and for all those that are going to call me out on the fact that some of these are older titles can rot. it is like a warm sweater and a cup of smooth coffee – don’t you get it?!?

Live Free of Die Hard

i highly anticipated this movie but was disappointed that it was pg-13 so i avoided seeing it in the theater. i know, classy that i prefer john mcclane saying shut the fuck up rather than shut the hell up. i rather fancy the swearing. it makes the film.

i am glad i waited. i found an unrated version of the film and purchased it. it didn’t even have to see it to know that if the word fuck cameos in this at least more than once then it will be good. and boy oh boy was it! this was the first unrated film that actually lived up to it’s unrated status. most of those claims offer maybe another set of boobs or something dumb. the unrated phenomenon is highly over-rated and just gives movie studios another copy for nerds to buy.

i do disagree with all of those that think it is the best yet. stoopid. bruce willis kind of has that i still got it look on his face the entire time. which is fine because john mcclane is a hard ass… maybe there just wasn’t enough blood. see it if you even slightly enjoy this sorta shit.

Epic Movie

wow. there were moments that i found myself cutting my arm in this film. i had to torture myself – like watching a bad hip hop video. avoid at all costs.

Alien vs Predator Requiem

now this was not that bad. well, i can’t honestly say that. it had it’s moments like most movies like this do. but those i went with all agreed that the dialogue and story line could be wrapped up in a sack full of kittens and stones and thrown into the local river. we simply want to see aliens and predators in some sort of arena tearing each others faces off. just ask michael vick.

the end line is fucking ridiculous. a little girl looks up to her mother and asks in a dorky voice mommy… are the monster’s gone? and the mom looks up to the sky and says yes. fade.

Knocked Up

i thought this was a great film. it is the first pseudo girly film that balances the two sides of the film so both sexes can enjoy. there are moments when i am like YES!. it keeps a great pace and i always like watching my girl laugh. the part i could leave out is the actual birth part. gross.

this video below reminded me of the movie in a weird disconnected irrelevant sort of way.

i want a transformer

am i the only one who is wondering where steven spielberg is getting his dinosaurs and transformers? i went to see the official transformers movie last night with my good pal julian and it was a kick in the pants. we both enjoyed it thoroughly. don’t get me wrong, a movie with a budget this big is famous for having an onslaught of type casting and stupid lines with comic relief. just try to ignore that hollywood bullshit to see the parts where the transformers beat the spark plugs out of one another – it is sooo cool.

let’s be honest though: this is a total dude movie. hot rods with god like voices demolishing everything in their pathways with rock and roll blaring in the background. bring it. i will probably see this film quite a few more times and i fully support a sequal. check out the trailer below if you have yet to see it.

so i got this movie constantine in the mail from netflix and i had no idea what it was. like most of the movies i get from netflix i couldn’t remember adding it to my queue. so i went back to netflix to see what others had to say about it. i have an addiction to reading peoples personal opinions on movies. most of the time they are spot on and that has loosely become a basis for selection.

when i got to the page about the movie i found the review below on the first page. and for some reason i think this review is probably going to be more entertaining then the film itself which i still have yet to watch.

i have posted a lot of videos and movies lately. to be honest, they take the least amount of effort with the biggest payout. plus i find all of this stuff either fun or interesting. that being said, i am not a movie or video buff. but from time to time i will do a movie review. keep in mind that my taste in movies is not very good. i am an easy critic most of the time. i suggest everything to everyone. so take the following with a grain of salt.

i watched a few movies over the last few weeks and i want to share my opinion on some of them. i know what you are thinking: YES!

saw 3

out of all the genres of movies that exist i am the biggest fan of horror. don’t know why but i just am. i loved the first two saw movies but saw 3 was horrible. i was so disappointed that i took the time to post a review on netflix warning others. my netflix review: One saw, two saw, three saw crap. I loved the first two. This one was desperate. I don’t mind watching people get mangled as long as there is a thoughtful payout. It would take a team of serial killers to pull some of this stuff off and this movie attempts to convince you that it is a bed ridden cancer patient with a brain tumor and an emotionally unstable ex-junkie. If there is a Saw four I most likely will not waste my time.

jesus camp

this movie is extremely different from saw 3. this is a documentary that is pretty much about the title: jesus camp. i really enjoyed this film and think it is worth checking out despite your beliefs. it surrounds a evangelical camp for children in kansas city, missouri. holy bible belt batman! this one is a head trip!

jackass two

it took me forever to see the first one. mostly because i wasn’t really too interested. however my buddy jeffrey convinced me one afternoon to sit down with him, have a few beers and watch it. i laughed so hard i almost died. it wasnâ€™t enough of an impact for me to go to the theater to see the sequel but i did make sure to put it on my netfilx list for when it came out.

i give this one a c+. don’t get me wrong, it made me laugh really hard and there are some scenes that i had to watch a couple of times. but it felt like they were taking some advice from the creators of saw 3. they went way too hard on some of the scenes. so hard that you could tell the guys doing these crazy acts had fear in their eyes. steveo is an exception though – how he is still alive amazes me. if this sort of thing is your bag then you will enjoy this movie. if it isn’t really your thing then just rent it to watch the opening scene. it is beyond me how they pulled some of this stuff off.

silent hill = crap

so i rented silent hill and watched it with my girl. this was one of those films that i decided not to give credit to the reviews that were left on netflix. everyone said it was soooo dumb and that you will hate yourself for watching it. i am a nut case for horror movies so i have seen a lot of really good films and a lot of really bad films. silent hill is not only a terrible horror movie but it it s a terrible movie in general. games should stay as games just like athletes and singers should not go into acting. feel free to rent it and hate yourself â€“ i did.

superstar dj keoki: from hero to darsha brady

growing up i was never into sports. in fact i am still not. i hate being that guy who walks into a bar and sits at the bar top and some dude asks me â€˜hey do you know who won the game today?â€™ and i have to cower pathetically and confess that i have no idea what game he is talking about. i usually bite my tongue to not debate how sports are over rated and waaay over funded. only if cancer research had a nike endorsement. well i guess they have lance.

now that i am way off subjectâ€¦ the point is that i never idolized bo jackson â€“ if i did it was only to fit in with my friends. sorry pals. i did however idolize superstar dj keoki who was an amazing dj in his day. he was catapulted into the electronic music scene through the club kids movement in nyc in the mid 80â€™s. this is a whole other story that can be better explained if you rent the following 2 films:

1. party monster – starring macaulay culkin. this is a great movie with great casting. even marilyn mason has a role!

2. party monster the shockumentary – this is a documentary in which #1 was based. i preferred this one because it showed so much amazing footage.

all of this to say: i met keoki a few times and every time i talked with him he got weirder + weirder. the first time i met him he was wearing tight gold pants and used the turntable as a rotating cocaine auto-feed as he stood above it snorting away. the second time i met him he explained how he never wears watches and that he has no windows in his house because he hated knowing what time it was. it wasnâ€™t long after this that i figured he wasnâ€™t the best role model for me and that i should probably go back to worshiping bill lambier. the flyer i posted above was the last time i had a short chat with keoki at a show in pdx and after that i wrote him off as a total ball of schmuck. i have started to hate famous electronic musicians because they have all had a chance to be a poster child for a scene that the larger half of society knows nothing about â€“ instead they give it all up for white drugs. donâ€™t get me started on paul jokenfold who at the last show i saw him at came out flapping his arms like he was the second coming of christ. just pull the trigger paulâ€¦ pull the trigger.

v for vendetta: my half-ass movie review

so all my friends tell me i am a terrible movie critic and i have come to terms with it. so please don’t hold me accountable. that being said – check out ‘v for vendetta’. i thought is was a cool flick but to be honest natalie portman makes it worth while. check it then when you are done feel free to wreck it.
