i heart streaming radio and i often use itunes as my source. if you listen to any sort of electronic music you may have noticed the new itunes 9.0 update (yes, i know there are millions) decided to combine the dance and electronic categories into electronica.

i do think the marriage of the genre titles was needed but i am not sure electronica was the best title. what would i have chosen? i don’t know. i just don’t like it. rabble rabble!!!

well, i couldn’t talk about this without including a track to bump for the weekend. this track is a classic and is one of my legacy battle weapons in my vinyl arsenal. enjoy.

microsoft – “we do not like black people”

i love this story but i am not surprised. advertising sometimes is not too far off from blatant racism. social profiling and stereotyping is everywhere and in cases like this it sometimes leaks.

microsoft put together an ad that they later decided to make some ethnic (sloppy) changes to. katu says it best:

A photo on the Seattle-based company’s U.S. Web site shows two men, one Asian and one black, and a white woman seated at a conference room table. But on the Web site of Microsoft’s Polish business unit, the black man’s head has been replaced with that of a white man. The color of his hand remains unchanged.

uh bill, can we make the guy in the center less black? maybe try to find a younger whiter guy that looks less wise and more like a smart ass? – not to mention leaving the hand black. if they would have crossed their t’s on this one they would have had the option to say that they turned the white guy black. darshes.

on the flip side of this – i got a new macbook pro recently and it is a battle axe in which i am learning to yield it’s raw power.

the important specs:

now while these specs may mean nothing to most i must mention that after tap dancing with a solid state drive i will never go back. i am already trying to figure out how i can get one in my mac pro as well. there’s no moving parts, no seek time, no weird clicking noises – nothing. just raw speed. photoshop literally takes 1 second to load. add in the 8gb of ram and yourself have a murder machine. oh and i went with the non glossy screen – for i am not a fan. i want to get work done, not stare at candy all day.

and while i like to give microsoft a hard time, i run xp in sync with osx. why? because i can. plus, how else am i going to test crappy browsers that can’t seem to die?

i will never stop giving ie6 a hard time. i swear there will be celebration riots in the streets once it finally dies. hooray!!!!1

the new ultra limited retro ipod fail

i have had my 1st generation ipod shuffle since they came out. even though it is still making tunes happen, it is only a matter of time before the thing stops working. i like the idea of a small music device with limited capacity. i am always into something new so it great to switch it up often – i don’t need 50,000 songs in my pocket or whatever.

i was really into the 2nd generation shuffles, even though i never got one (mine still works). a couple of days ago apple introduced the 3rd generation shuffles and yesterday i decided to take some time to check out how it works. and all i can say is wtf apple? here’s the skinny:

the shuffle has no controls. they decided to put the controls on the headphones. you know, the same headphones that make your ears hurt if you have them in for longer than an hour with little to no base response. the headphones that tell everyone in the world that you are using an ipod. the headphones that if you loose will render your shuffle useless.

but wait! it gets better! they now have this new proprietary technology that they have dubbed voiceover which tells you what song or playlist you are listening to while you use your headphones to navigate your tunes. two things about voiceover:

who came up with that name? did it not occur to these guys that there might be a few other things in this world that refer to voiceover and that it might lead to confusion in the future (great point brino)? or is it something that just needed a name but no-one is really going to talk about it as if it matters?
wtf is the deal with the robo voices? this had me up in arms. fail apple, fail. if you are going to push a new technology that is going to talk through the first through seconds of my favorite songs to remind me of what i am listening to – please make it pleasant. yes, a computer talking that sounded just like a computer talking was amazing about 20 years ago but hot damn didn’t your team manage to standardize touch screen mobile devices? imo that voice should sound like an angel. i should be able to choose if i want britney herself to introduce her songs. not robbie the robot. don’t fret, all you need to get it to go away is to loose your headphones. oh, and i like how in the guided tour they play this is what it sounds like if you use a mac… now this is what it sounds like if you use a pc… then the chick goes back to again, this is what it sounds like on a mac – as if she is emphasizing an amazing difference between the two crappy robo-voices.

ok, rant over. i love my shuffle and i do love apple. their machines are far superior – i just think that sometimes they make moves that are not in the best interest of the general population. like pulling firewire 400 from their new notebooks!?! my favorite part of my ipod though is my bose headphones. buy a pair – they changed my life. i don’t care what a little device can do… if it sounds like shit, it sounds like shit.

i recently purchased a new machine. and i am geeked out.

but wtf are the specs? you ask?!? let me take you on a tour…

a patriotic machine indeed. i decided to name her mia wallace. i would consider writing that in on november 4th.

i decided to take out my knife. any reason to take out my knife is a good reason.

upon opening the box i was reminded that this product was designed by apple in california.

i wonder if made in china seemed less sexy?

still in it’s sci-fi cocoon i pulled the 50 pound tower out of the box.

it was ready for some juice. but first, i wanted to inspect the guts.

i wish i could fit inside this thing. i would bring a blanket and a 6 pack and just hang out with the two 2.8GHz quad-core intel xeon harpertown processors n shit.

i had it shipped with 4GB of ram. it can fit 32GB. and yes, someday i am going to try to max it out. just for the nerd of it.

i also had it shipped with 2 1TB drives. i plan on throwing in 2 more here in the next few weeks. if it could fit 10 i would get 10.

i opted for the wireless keyboard and decided to later use my bluetooth mouse. i have never liked apples mice. for the love of god, give me a right click button.

now all i need is a new monitor and time to actually work on it.

mia will make sure shit goes down.

microsoft fails yet again

a short while back microsoft decided to do an advertising comeback to the wildly popular i’m a mac, i’m a pc ads. they decided to come up with something lighthearted featuring jerry seinfeld + bill gates. a campaign that ran microsoft a grand total of 300 million greenbacks. 10 million of which went directly to jerry for the commercial posted above.

well, today they announced that they were pulling the plug on the project since it didn’t get as much of a response as they had hoped. the news says Commercials were roundly criticized which i am assuming means people thought they were gaydar. watch the video above and make up your own mind. to be honest, i don’t even know what the commercial is trying to say? the only winner here is jerry. 10 million more $$$$$$.

vista will forever be the fall of microsoft imo. they really decided to make things complicated for reasons god only knows. there are like a hundred different versions of the operating system and all of my nerdy computer buddies that run on pc’s all have stuck with xp. apple is gaining market share at a rapid rate while microsoft continues to try and strong arm people into using their products. god, when silverlight came out i just about shit my pants. i thought to myself wtf is this?!? why do you guys keep pushing out sub-par crap!!!!??!?!?!!1

how to hack an iphone

i spent countless hours trying to figure this out, and now that i have solved it i thought i would share my step by step process. while searching i found that there are a dozen or more different applications that allow you to hack or jailbreak your iphone. i tried almost all of them and most of the sites had shotty instructions or the methods just straight up didn’t work. i finally found software that did work. it is brought to you by the iphone dev team. click here to check out their site.

before we get started – here are my 4 disclaimers:

i am not liable – if you decide to do this. i am not responsible if something goes wack. like i said above, i have tinkered the crap outta of the iphone and it always seems to be salvageable. but if your phone freaks out and decides to explode i don’t want to hear about it.
i do not promote illegal activity – even though i am providing you instructions on how to hack your iphone… i am not doing it for you. i will show you the door, it is up to you to open it.
i offer no support – this is not a forum for discussion on the topic. if you hit a wall or get some bull shit error code, i suggest google. i do support positive feedback and general comments.
back up your iphone – do a synch on your machine if you have data you don’t want to loose such as contacts. i can’t promise you won’t loose data – so do your part.

ok, that being said, here is what you need to get started (don’t worry about understanding what any of these things are):

a mac – these instructions are only for mac users. i am sure it is not much different for the pc but unfortunately this tutorial is only for macs.
iTunes 7.7.1 – to find out what version you have, open itunes and click on about itunes from the menu above. if you have an older version then go to software update and install 7.7.1.
2.0.1 firmware – you can download it here
boot loader 4.6 – you can download it here
pwnage tool software – you can download it here

step one:

set your phone to the correct firmware /

plug your iphone into your machine and check to see what version of firmware you have. if you are already at 2.0.1 then you can skip this step and move to step two. if you are not then you will need to put your phone in recovery mode so you can restore your iphone with a different firmware.

to set your iphone into recovery mode: you will need to first turn it off – then you will want to hold your power button and home button at the same time for 10 seconds exactly. after 10 seconds have passed, let go of the power button but continue to hold the home button for another 10 seconds exactly. itunes should bounce then say your iphone is now in recovery mode you will need to restore it … blah, blah.

to update your firmware: you want to hold down the alt key and click restore. it will then open a file browser. select the 2.0.1 ipsw firmware file on your desktop and click ok.

NOTE: the restoration process will take a while. be patient and let it do it’s thing. go get a soda or something.

step two:

click the pineapple + initiate the hack program //

once the program starts you will see the above warning. much like my disclaimers click ok if you agree.

step three:

select your device ///

select your iphone + click the simple mode icon in the top left hand corner. click next.

step four:

prepare the firmware ////

select the restore.ipsw on your desktop downloaded in step one then click next.

step five:

bypass the boot loader web search /////

a prompt will ask you if you want to search the web for the 4.6 boot loader downloaded in step one – click no.

step six:

select the 4.6 boot loader //////

you will be asked if you would like to browse for the 4.6 boot loader file – click yes and select the file from the folder downloaded in step one.

NOTE: this step as well as step five may be bypassed if the software automatically detects the boot loader on your desktop.

step seven:

create a new custom firmware ///////

you will be asked to if you want to create a new .ispw firmware file – click yes.

step eight:

confess your sins ////////

you will be asked if you are a legit iphone – click no. this step is important, it will initiate the necessary file that will unlock your iphone for other sim cards.

step nine:

build your new ispw file /////////

in this step the software will build your new firmware. you will be prompted to put in your system password to proceed.

step ten:

allow for a fresh break //////////

you will be asked if your iphone has been hacked before. even if it has – select no.

step eleven:

set you iphone in recovery (dfu) mode ///////////

you will be asked to put your phone in recovery mode. the instructions are above in step one. however, the software makes it pretty easy. they even have a count down timer you can follow along.

step twelve:

confirm dfu mode ////////////

the software will let you know that you have successfully entered recovery mode (dfu mode). you can now close the software.

step thirteen:

restore using the custom firmware /////////////

go to itunes. it should detect your iphone is in recovery mode. click the restore button while holding the alt/option key. this will open a browser and allow you to select the new firmware file on the desktop. it should be named the same as the original 2.0.1 firmware only with the word custom in the title.

step fourteen:

let it do it’s thing //////////////

itunes will start the restore using the new custom file. this will take a while. walk away and do some push-ups or something.

step fifteen:

call someone who cares ///////////////

congrats! once your phone has restarted you are in the clear. take a paper clip and open up the sim card slot at the top and throw in your non-att sim card and give it a moment. you will see the name of your carrier in the top left hand of the iphone screen. i have only tested this for t-mobile but from research i have learned it works with any sim cards. i am a verizon user, which unfortunately is the only carrier that doesn’t use sim cards. oh well.

most people i know that have iphones continually fuck around with them despite their surroundings. at some point the etiquette was established that it is not cool to take a phone call when you are in the middle of having a conversation with someone (in person / real life) without saying hey, i am sorry but i have to grab this… where you would then walk to somewhere private to take your private call.

now it seems you can be talking with someone and if they are texting or fingering google maps it is totally fine. am i the only person that wants to smash everyones mobile devices?

everyone of my geek friends right now is saying: wake up idiot… mobile devices are the future. my response: maybe its time i get a dog. at least a dog will pay attention.

especially if i show it a picture of beef jerky on an iphone. bizarre.
