how to hack an iphone

i spent countless hours trying to figure this out, and now that i have solved it i thought i would share my step by step process. while searching i found that there are a dozen or more different applications that allow you to hack or jailbreak your iphone. i tried almost all of them and most of the sites had shotty instructions or the methods just straight up didn’t work. i finally found software that did work. it is brought to you by the iphone dev team. click here to check out their site.

before we get started – here are my 4 disclaimers:

i am not liable – if you decide to do this. i am not responsible if something goes wack. like i said above, i have tinkered the crap outta of the iphone and it always seems to be salvageable. but if your phone freaks out and decides to explode i don’t want to hear about it.
i do not promote illegal activity – even though i am providing you instructions on how to hack your iphone… i am not doing it for you. i will show you the door, it is up to you to open it.
i offer no support – this is not a forum for discussion on the topic. if you hit a wall or get some bull shit error code, i suggest google. i do support positive feedback and general comments.
back up your iphone – do a synch on your machine if you have data you don’t want to loose such as contacts. i can’t promise you won’t loose data – so do your part.

ok, that being said, here is what you need to get started (don’t worry about understanding what any of these things are):

a mac – these instructions are only for mac users. i am sure it is not much different for the pc but unfortunately this tutorial is only for macs.
iTunes 7.7.1 – to find out what version you have, open itunes and click on about itunes from the menu above. if you have an older version then go to software update and install 7.7.1.
2.0.1 firmware – you can download it here
boot loader 4.6 – you can download it here
pwnage tool software – you can download it here

step one:

set your phone to the correct firmware /

plug your iphone into your machine and check to see what version of firmware you have. if you are already at 2.0.1 then you can skip this step and move to step two. if you are not then you will need to put your phone in recovery mode so you can restore your iphone with a different firmware.

to set your iphone into recovery mode: you will need to first turn it off – then you will want to hold your power button and home button at the same time for 10 seconds exactly. after 10 seconds have passed, let go of the power button but continue to hold the home button for another 10 seconds exactly. itunes should bounce then say your iphone is now in recovery mode you will need to restore it … blah, blah.

to update your firmware: you want to hold down the alt key and click restore. it will then open a file browser. select the 2.0.1 ipsw firmware file on your desktop and click ok.

NOTE: the restoration process will take a while. be patient and let it do it’s thing. go get a soda or something.

step two:

click the pineapple + initiate the hack program //

once the program starts you will see the above warning. much like my disclaimers click ok if you agree.

step three:

select your device ///

select your iphone + click the simple mode icon in the top left hand corner. click next.

step four:

prepare the firmware ////

select the restore.ipsw on your desktop downloaded in step one then click next.

step five:

bypass the boot loader web search /////

a prompt will ask you if you want to search the web for the 4.6 boot loader downloaded in step one – click no.

step six:

select the 4.6 boot loader //////

you will be asked if you would like to browse for the 4.6 boot loader file – click yes and select the file from the folder downloaded in step one.

NOTE: this step as well as step five may be bypassed if the software automatically detects the boot loader on your desktop.

step seven:

create a new custom firmware ///////

you will be asked to if you want to create a new .ispw firmware file – click yes.

step eight:

confess your sins ////////

you will be asked if you are a legit iphone – click no. this step is important, it will initiate the necessary file that will unlock your iphone for other sim cards.

step nine:

build your new ispw file /////////

in this step the software will build your new firmware. you will be prompted to put in your system password to proceed.

step ten:

allow for a fresh break //////////

you will be asked if your iphone has been hacked before. even if it has – select no.

step eleven:

set you iphone in recovery (dfu) mode ///////////

you will be asked to put your phone in recovery mode. the instructions are above in step one. however, the software makes it pretty easy. they even have a count down timer you can follow along.

step twelve:

confirm dfu mode ////////////

the software will let you know that you have successfully entered recovery mode (dfu mode). you can now close the software.

step thirteen:

restore using the custom firmware /////////////

go to itunes. it should detect your iphone is in recovery mode. click the restore button while holding the alt/option key. this will open a browser and allow you to select the new firmware file on the desktop. it should be named the same as the original 2.0.1 firmware only with the word custom in the title.

step fourteen:

let it do it’s thing //////////////

itunes will start the restore using the new custom file. this will take a while. walk away and do some push-ups or something.

step fifteen:

call someone who cares ///////////////

congrats! once your phone has restarted you are in the clear. take a paper clip and open up the sim card slot at the top and throw in your non-att sim card and give it a moment. you will see the name of your carrier in the top left hand of the iphone screen. i have only tested this for t-mobile but from research i have learned it works with any sim cards. i am a verizon user, which unfortunately is the only carrier that doesn’t use sim cards. oh well.

this is a great attempt to cut down the phone trees. what is a phone tree you may ask? well when you call an 800 number you usually have to punch of bull shit in order to get someone on the phone. as you venture into different branches of the system you are successfully climbing the tree. which you wish you could cut down and burn.

bringo has taken the time to do all the work for you and apparently dredged up the direct numbers you need in order to get a pulse on the line. not bad at all. even though i think the name is a bit dorky.

washington mutual is a great example of the worst phone tree known to man.

the wamu challenge

pretend you have a washington mutual debit card and you just realized that it is missing. so you decide to go on their uber intuitive website to find out what to do. here is my challenge: if anyone can find the words lost and card next to each other anywhere on the site, i will paypal you $20.

trust me, you won’t succeed. you would figure if you just call the 800 number you could get in contact with someone to cancel it. wrong again. it not only isn’t an option as part of their tree but when you finally do get ahold of someone they throw you back into the system.

so then you figure, hell i will just call my branch. nope – it diverts you to the tree.

my only explanation is that it is by design. as a web developer i can’t imagine why they wouldn’t put [ lost your debit/credit card? click here! ] right on the effin’ home page?

my $20 is on the table. this situation recently happened to my father and he was so frustrated that he went into his local branch and asked the manager to try it out right in front of him. 20 mins later my dad told him that if he didn’t have a solution within the next week he would pull his account.

he was with wamu for at least 2 decades and he pulled everything.

i repeat, my $20 is on the table

3 freakin’ neat communication tools

i wanted to post on all of these so i figured i would do it all at once. they all are hip web communication tools that are free to use for the time being. some of them are older but might be new to you. i find most of this stuff to be a goofy fit for the average joe but those cutting edge nerds out there can rejoice. this is almost as good as the file destructor 2.0 that gets you out of school projects.

let’s begin – we will start with grand central.

1. grand central

grand central does so many things that it is straight rated R for retarded. it essentially uses the power of voice over IP (web phone technology like skype) and forwards everything to your existing number. did i mention it is brought to you by that up and coming search engine google?

my real life example: so say you are a really hot chick and you sign up and pick out your very own brand new phone #. you then go out that night and meet a bunch of dudes that want to do the nasty and they keep bugging you for your phone #. so you give them your grand central number. 4am rolls around and you are fast asleep and WHAM! your phone rings (it is the horny guy from the dive bar). you pick it up and a nice automated voice says “hello, grand central here, you have a phone call coming in… would you like to take it, send it to voicemail or listen to them leave the voicemail? you choose the latter and the horny dude starts to leave a drunken message while you sit there and listen to. you then have the option to cut him off and connect saying look, i have thought this through and i want you to come over… i want to be on you.

2. jott

their opening line says it best: jott converts your voice into emails, text messages, reminders, lists and appointments.

you sign up for an account, you feed it a little protocol like what email you prefer n shit and it spits you out a number. you then call that number when you want to email yourself or someone else a message.

billy in the car example: dialing jott, ringing… hey billy, this is billy… look i wanted to remind you how dangerous it is to talk on the cellphone while driving. also, make sure to call your shrink and let him know you are having conversations with yourself again for extended periods of time. alright , good talk… billy then goes home and opens up his email and his entire conversation/voicemail is typed up waiting for him, from him. click here to check it out

3. twitter

my oh my – am sure there are people seeing this saying um twitter is like old news… i tweet 90 times a day… it is like totally bonkers… i am um, like, a darsh. this is one of the hot zones of the web right now and if you haven’t heard about it, you eventually will.

here is their tagline: twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: what are you doing?

aka the ultimate digital leash. it is designed to inform as little or as many people as you want about what your every move is by simply texting #404040. so you SMS: [i am taking a dump right now] and the whole world can know. there are a ton of practical and beneficial applications for this tool and i support them all 100% but the social side of it is something i avoid. i hate my cell phone – but i use twitter because it allows me to easily post on my blog from my cell phone. and holy hot cakes it is all very important information.

this website is awesome.

if you have a computer and it doesn’t have photoshop on it then it is like having a car without a windshield. well, actually it is nothing like that. my point is that PS is a major staple for a shit load of people. profound.

this website has some of the best tutorials i have ever seen. the part that pushed me over the edge and forced me to grab my pom pom’s was the fact you can download the PSD that correlates with each tutorial. holy canoly!

if you are a PS amature like myself then take a moment to try some of these out, leave a comment or two and tell your friends.

holy freak nasty. this is the sort of thing i would have used when i was in college. bravo!

it is called file destructor 2.0 and it simply creates a fake file that is error ridden allowing you to turn in an assignment and blame it on your shitty computer. and yes, you can select your flavor. dude! i have a powerpoint due in an hour and i have been feeding the homless… what do i do!! – don’t worry feller, i have been there… and all you need FILE DESTRUCTOR!.
