this is the third, and possibly final, installment of the zeitgeist documentaries. the first two were mind melters and the reason i like this last film the most is because it focuses so strongly on solutions – not just how fucked things are.

i wish they would have used a different placeholder image since i feel very few people will be motivated to click play on a film showing starving children. however, the main point of the film is how we cannot sustain our current usage of resources. yes, i know, it sounds like a bunch of global warming bullshit but seriously, take a look around… the numbers don’t lie.

i don’t agree with everything in this film but that’s not the point. the point is for us to look at things that we don’t normally look at in a fresh perspective with the goal of making conscience changes in our lives to benefit others. life is about putting others before yourself. life is about love. happy valentines day.

you need to get off facebook

we are watering down the relationships that matter to us and giving power to the relationships that don’t. my favorite part of this video is where it says you don’t have 852 friends… you have about 4… and that’s good – because this is very true.

i continue to avoid participating on facebook and people continue to hate on me for not accepting their friend request. i can honestly say that i don’t feel left out or as if i am missing out on something. i no longer have a personal email address either. this is all part of a decommissioning plan for me to eventually get off the internet.

the irony of all this is that i make a living buy helping agencies leverage their brands social presence to realize measurable return on their campaign efforts and ad spend. i don’t need to spend 7 hours a day participating in facebook to understand how it works. it’s not about understanding technology capabilities and constraints – it’s about understanding people and what we strive for on a spiritual and carnal level. despite the social connectivity of the web, people haven’t changed. look at las vegas – that shit will always be the same. they know what people want.

i don’t want to say that facebook is good for nothing. there are plenty of good things that come from it. my concern is that people are getting lost in a digital world that is ultimately effecting how they maintain and build relationships in the real world. the constraints of self expression and social pressure will limit your mind set of possibility. but in the end i guess that is everything – a world of predefined borders for us to stay within.

18th-century ship found at trade center site

so while digging at the world trade center site they found a ship under where one of the buildings stood. looks like the towers aren’t the only thing that laid there to rest. c r e e p y.

On Tuesday morning, workers excavating the site of the underground vehicle security center for the future World Trade Center hit a row of sturdy, upright wood timbers, regularly spaced, sticking out of a briny gray muck flecked with oyster shells.

Obviously, these were more than just remnants of the wooden cribbing used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to extend the shoreline of Manhattan Island ever farther into the Hudson River. (Lower Manhattan real estate was a precious commodity even then.)

i am reading the book the 12th planet and this video pretty much summarizes what i am reading. throughout reading this book i have been mesmerized by how little we know about ourselves and where we came from – but what really trips me out is how little we care. we grow up and are told what to believe so we just live our lives believing it. science and religion set our standards and free thought is considered a disorder.

that being said, challenge every thought you have ever had about where you think we came from. science and religion have us bound. the more you open your eyes the more you will discover.

my warning: this video is violent and down right hard to watch. however, i think it depicts a very real world fueled by violence and inequality. i also really like m.i.a.

it’s interesting how intimidating men must feel with guns. but it doesn’t register to me. like one guy has a gun and the other doesn’t so the guy with the gun just yells and hits cause he can… but in the end he is a coward.

put the gun down. now let’s both take a knife and see where we can take this. cool?

this is wild. for some reason i remember seeing this at one point however my friend brino recently sent it to me and i was floored. it is nuts to hear donald duck constantly repeat hail hitler! – there is a wiki article here if you want to see what it is all about.

i am a strong believer that walt disney was from a satanic bloodline. sounds nuts i know. but it is worth reading about.

i wasn’t really sure why at first. i watched it like 10 times before i realized that it reminded me of being a kid and attempting ridiculous things and the pure joy that was experienced when they actually worked.

naturally my memories are not that of rerouting speed trains but more of tying two bottle rockets together and seeing if both of them would travel together to their destiny. and when we were successful it was moments of bliss.

when i was young i never understood why adults were such assholes to kids. i always wondered if adults remembered being kids and where the disconnect in communication took place during the course of life. also as a young mind i wondered if it would happen to me – but i took more of the mindset that i would be different. i guess i teared up because i am no different then the adults i remember.

i recently spent some time with my brothers kids. my nephew michael is 3 and he was playing with some legos and he decided to sing me a song. it was fantastic. however, i realized that i had to struggle to be in the moment. my mind was clouded with all the bullshit that we are conditioned to care about – sex, money, politics, religion, success, appeal, education, health… the path of building a modern well balanced life.

maybe it is where i am currently at in life that has me thinking this way. possibly because db clay deflated. possibly because my mother passed away in recent years. it could be as simple as the surge in reality television that has caused me to doubt purpose. maybe it’s that we all believe everything we hear even though everything is unbelievable. during my high school years my dad would take me to school every morning and drop me off – he would always pray with me and explain to me that you go to school to get a good education so you can get into a good college so you can get a good job with good benefits so you can work your way up the ladder. i remember my first day at my first real job. i was a sales consultant for a tech company. i sat at my desk and at one moment during the afternoon (after all the orientation and introductions were done) this dark silence covered me and all i could think was this is it? – this is point B? from that moment on i sank into a very dark depression for about 9 months. if a fax came in you would see who it was for and put it in their mail box – if you left for lunch or an errand you would move a magnet on a board so everyone knew where you were and when you would be back – if someone had a birthday, everyone would stand around and eat cake and say nice things about that person while forcing tight lipped grins (yes just like office space). this was the reality of the modern business environment and i was fucking terrible at it.

outside of my relationships only two things brought me joy during those early years: techno gear + computers with internet. lame to some but these things were what made up my sanctuary. those that know me the best know that i would surround myself with these things all the time. in this picture below i was 25 and it was around the time i had a major shift in my mindset. i realized that there really is no point B. i always started projects with a point B in mind and when i let go of that it is when i started creating my best stuff. and no, i don’t play the guitar. i play with it – poorly.

i know that i am officially rambling at this point – but i guess the video posted above kinda sprouted a grip of emotions that i haven’t experienced in a while. db clay was by far my most passionate venture – but towards the end it became very stale for all of us. we are all creative fountains and it became nothing more than a fight for survival. which we lost. this entire year slowly broke us down physically, emotionally and mentally. however what we learned has proven to be invaluable. not just business. the other night i was hanging out with garett drinking wine in the now empty db clay studio and we both were reminiscing and i think we laughed the hardest when i asked him you remember when we discovered that the fashion industry is all a joke? and garett replied yeah! you mean these assholes are the wizards behind the curtain?!? – every industry is such a hustle that the people involved don’t really know what they are doing or where they are going. it is the proverbial carrot on the stick… just the carrot is a sweaty wad of cash. sigh.

i am now free. so free that it is almost binding. i have been spending so much time problem solving that now i don’t know what to do. with a clear mind i have started to dust off the old creative building blocks and i am ready to hit it with a new force.

we only have one life to live and i am dedicated to making my life about two bottle rockets again.

oh shit, the news has gone 2.0

not sure if anyone has noticed lately but the news/media is starting to allow for comments and other social outlets. not just local either. bbc has social bookmarking icons while cnn has twitter support.

naturally most of them you have to either sign up an account to participate or you have to be moderated in which case they may alter your interaction. no real surprise there though. i am surprised however about the twitter support and social icons. i know i may be going out on a limb here but i think it is a little early for the media to attach themselves to these 3rd party services (especially with twitters down time track record). personally i think they are rolling the dice – but it is a risk that may not leave them behind if social networking standards do set in.

the comments are cool i guess. it gives even the pawns a soapbox which is something society has never experienced in the past. to them though it is all raw data… the bigger the reaction a story gets the more you will hear about like minded stories. love that traffic!

anything is better than the cnn t-shirts. man, that is a whole other topic.

on a separate yet related note: it is hot as hell this weekend in pdx. tracy and i just got back from europe (i will post a few pics soon) and we went from 70 degree weather to 102 degree weather. wtf?!? well, i was on good old katu and i saw the 7 day forecast and monday had a question mark on it. i remember when they started to implement the icons on the days. umbrellas n shit? who in portland uses an umbrella? especially when there is no rain? i personally think it allows them to further escape accountability. the umbrella says: no rain will fall but just in case you may want to invest in a peppermint umbrella while the question mark says: we have absolutley no idea what is going to happen. every man, woman and child is on their own.

why is there an umbrella on the days it isn’t raining but no umbrella on the day it is?

god if they read this they are going to think i am jerk face. thus why i am linking to them here – feel free to click it a few times so they get some traffic from good old mr. diggles. together we can change their antics.

i stage my photo shoots like small movies, with sets, costumes, elaborate props, fog machines and special effects make-up. i use hotlights rather than strobes, because they give me better fog effects as well as a warmer color shift. my images are not photoshop collages. i use photoshop to finesse details and to adjust color and contrast for printing. i use friends and family members as actors and crew. everyone works for free. we do it for fun.
