i am working at a new joint… which i will disclose at a later moment. the one thing i gained so far is the beauty of thumb drives. last week a co-worker was like hey! there are 16GB thumb drives on sale for $20 who wants one!??! i suck at mortal kombat.

i was the first to commit. and here is what i have on my thumb drive so far.

i am so excited i could just shit myself.

i recently bought more server space. i opened my first personal account with media temple. i had to do some major domain shifting with db clay going away so i decided to get a substantial server.

um… ok, but why does this matter? – well i am glad you asked! i now can finally drive some substantial traffica to my site. i have been hosting with bluehost for the last 4 years. and i have about 30 domains on one package – which means that if any one of those 30 domains gets hit with some traffic then the entire account shuts down until the traffic goes away. so i had to tread lightly. i am keeping my bluehost account since i love them. but i moved mrdiggles over to my media temple box so i can take a hit.

wow that’s really cool! by why should i care? – omfg! i am so super glad you asked! now that i can spread my bandwidth on toast i am going to start releasing free shit!

what kinda free shit are we talking? – another fantastic question! wordpress templates, slick image gallery templates, basic website layouts, tutorials, javascript and ajax ideas with source files and oh so much more! and for those that could care less about that stuff, i am also going to be rolling out free music and putting up a mrdiggles image gallery. holy fuck!!!!!!!1

so yeah… pretty pumped.

i recently purchased a new machine. and i am geeked out.

but wtf are the specs? you ask?!? let me take you on a tour…

a patriotic machine indeed. i decided to name her mia wallace. i would consider writing that in on november 4th.

i decided to take out my knife. any reason to take out my knife is a good reason.

upon opening the box i was reminded that this product was designed by apple in california.

i wonder if made in china seemed less sexy?

still in it’s sci-fi cocoon i pulled the 50 pound tower out of the box.

obgyn

it was ready for some juice. but first, i wanted to inspect the guts.

i wish i could fit inside this thing. i would bring a blanket and a 6 pack and just hang out with the two 2.8GHz quad-core intel xeon harpertown processors n shit.

i had it shipped with 4GB of ram. it can fit 32GB. and yes, someday i am going to try to max it out. just for the nerd of it.

i also had it shipped with 2 1TB drives. i plan on throwing in 2 more here in the next few weeks. if it could fit 10 i would get 10.

i opted for the wireless keyboard and decided to later use my bluetooth mouse. i have never liked apples mice. for the love of god, give me a right click button.

now all i need is a new monitor and time to actually work on it.

the software i use + love most

my friend david frey got me excited about doing on a post on what software i use most. while most of my readers could give a shit less, i think some people out there might be like well omfg, i think that is absolutely fascinating! more, more, more!

yes, i know there are probably better programs than what i choose to use – but i am a creature of habit. plus there are many factors in play when i consider using a certain platform. usually speed is #1. i don’t have time for bullshit.

my desktop

i keep my desktop clean. yes it gets cluttered when i work on a project but once i am done or need to start on a different section of a project i always clean my work space up. i don’t have a background picture. i think wallpapers are dumb. makes your brain work harder to find what you need. imagine if your car windshield was a picture but you had to look around it or through it to drive your car. ok, maybe that is an extreme analogy. for the record, i work on a 17″ macbook pro w/ 2 gb ram.

when i start up my machine – this is the order of programs i open… almost like a robot:

firefox

this is a no-brainer – firefox rules. how fast can i get my internet rolling?!?! i love the extensions. i also open up safari since i like to always have 2 browser options at all times.

adium

i use adium for my chat service. it wraps all of them in one. i usually open this right away so i can start to bother or be bothered. it is almost embarrassing that i am always on.

microsoft entourage

yes, this is bit of a surprise. it is the only ms product i use and to be honest i don’t really like it. however, i have been using some form of outlook for the past 5 years and i have been too lazy to get away from it. my friend graeme suggests imail and i have heard thunderbird is good but i haven’t really looked into it. for now, it delivers my mail in a resource hungry and clunky environment.

transmit

i host a shit ton of websites and i have always been let down with past ftp clients. transmit is far and away the best i have ever used. and the company that pushes this little drug is from portland to boot!

bbedit

i use bare bones edit to work on my markup. i have built just about every website for the past 4 years using this platform. it is super lightweight. sometimes it grinds when i save a file on a congested connection but that i more my connection’s problem not the software. that issue alone has taught me how to work locally more. i love to see it live!!!!1 i am considering coda but we’ll see. i need more time.

adobe creative suite 3 (mostly PS)

i got a copy of photoshop 5 when i was 18 and ever since i have been a believer that a computer without photoshop is like a dog with no legs: sure it is fun but can you really do anything with it? poor analogy yes.

i use photoshop, flash, acrobat and bridge. everything else i don’t really touch. but i have to have to know if i want to i can.

itunes / songbird

gotta have my music! i have used itunes for a while, like most people, but then i discovered songbird. i love that songbird has tabbed browsing and runs off the mozilla firefox engine. however, much like itunes it is a resource slut. and also much like my browsers, i often have them both open. i need more ram!!!1 when i was a pc user i used winamp. i love winamp. that shit opens so fast it is crazy.

random apps

the rest of these are programs that have made it into my dock but i use very little. i like the ilife bundle for it really is super easy. if i need to edit a video i don’t need final cut since i am not really doing anything other than cutting and adding text. iphoto is great for viewing pictures. profound. locomotive runs my local rails database which i hardly turn on. terminal i use for ssh and good old subversion. calculator helps me add and subtract and ical keeps me on time. i have never been able to keep a calender before ical.

well, that’s it. i have just barfed out my whole dock. if i had to narrow it down, all i really need is bbedit, transmit, firefox and photoshop to create a really dope project. but i need my music as well! AH!

in the honor of all these comments being posted, i would love to know what your top 3-4 programs are. if you don’t have more than 2 then let me know what your top 3 websites are. and yes, mrdiggles.com gives you a bonus. i don’t know what kind of bonus though.

microsoft fails yet again

a short while back microsoft decided to do an advertising comeback to the wildly popular i’m a mac, i’m a pc ads. they decided to come up with something lighthearted featuring jerry seinfeld + bill gates. a campaign that ran microsoft a grand total of 300 million greenbacks. 10 million of which went directly to jerry for the commercial posted above.

well, today they announced that they were pulling the plug on the project since it didn’t get as much of a response as they had hoped. the news says Commercials were roundly criticized which i am assuming means people thought they were gaydar. watch the video above and make up your own mind. to be honest, i don’t even know what the commercial is trying to say? the only winner here is jerry. 10 million more $$$$$$.

vista will forever be the fall of microsoft imo. they really decided to make things complicated for reasons god only knows. there are like a hundred different versions of the operating system and all of my nerdy computer buddies that run on pc’s all have stuck with xp. apple is gaining market share at a rapid rate while microsoft continues to try and strong arm people into using their products. god, when silverlight came out i just about shit my pants. i thought to myself wtf is this?!? why do you guys keep pushing out sub-par crap!!!!??!?!?!!1

dell finally put out a computer that wasn’t boring and ugly. i personally don’t recommend dell to anyone. they have become the official disposable computer. the reason you see them in so many offices is because they have great corporate contracts that make you feel less guilty sending one machine after another back.

apparently they decided to mold their plastic into something less gross. i have always wondered why PC outfits haven’t made more sexy machines. i am guessing they might be harder to source parts for or service?

either way, dell came out with what they call the hybrid and it is actually pretty nice looking. it is really small which may be the reason you have to dig for the specs on their site.

i have never owned a dell – i used to build all my own machines before i discovered the ease of macs. and ever since i started using my macbook pro i have been looking at all the pc laptops out there and i still have yet to see one that doesn’t look cheap. the only pc laptops i recommend are ibm / lenovo.

and that is my nerdy post for the week. i swear.

why the iphone isn’t for me

all the geeks out there no that a new iphone was announced yesterday and it will be shipping in july. for those that don’t know, steve jobs of apple announces new products twice a year at a thing called the wwdc which stands for worldwide developers conference. this time they introduced the newest, more badass, cheaper version of the iphone.

now, why i am a little bummed.

i hate phones in the first place: those that know me, my voicemail is almost always full and i never call back. my friend graeme keeps telling me that the blackberry is the shit for emails and such but dear god i long for ambiguity.
i refuse to downgrade: while the iphone may be a quantum leap from any other phone in the market it is still not a laptop. i would rather look awkward with my macbook pro strapped to my head and be able to cruise my apps like a mother fucker. once i experience a technology, especially in relation to speed, i cannot regress.
i am not really into ipods: i have a first generation ipod shuffle that was given to me. i really do love it but i have never been in a hurry to upgrade in any form. i like that all i have to do is stick it in the side of my machine and we are rocking. also, there is no interface which is also appealing to me for some reason. ignorance is bliss i guess.
social stigma: for some reason i feel that there is a social status being attached to these phones. usually that stuff is a big turn off for me. unlike fat chicks.
did i mention i hate phones?: god i hate my phone. especially when it rings.

ok, so before any of you iphone lovers fist me please know that i am not knocking the iphone. i am just saying why it isn’t for me. i am pumped apple is pushing the pace since no one else seems to be. my wife has an iphone and i am excited for her. it truly is an amazing piece of technology with a whole world of possibility.

the only reason i am interested in getting one is to develop new applications for it. that is super cool.

last thing. i was a little bummed that nothing pertaining specifically to computers was announced in detail at the wwdc. i thought this article on cnn was telling below. the entire article was about the iphone and the last line of the article speaks of the new os. wow such detail!

my friend brino just informed me that the wwdc is only once a year and that macworld is where they introduce the new products. gawd… now i feel like a n00bshit.

i love how all the computer equipment is his focus. monitors for weapons and printers for punching bags. i wonder if people were still nice to him on his next day at work?
